Take this exciting opportunity to build and lead a new Innovation Program at one of the best children’s hospitals in the country, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). CHLA is hiring its Chief Innovation Officer (CInO) to develop and lead a new strategic program in innovation with an emphasis on clinical transformation. This well-funded Innovation Program will align with and help drive CHLA’s enterprise vision to advance transformative care and maintain their position as a pediatric health system of choice.
The mission of this new program is to build a thriving culture across the CHLA clinical and research enterprise, supporting new ideas, incubating novel processes and technologies, and convening internal and external communities to support innovation in pediatric care. The CInO will cultivate a culture open to both transformational and incremental innovation. The successful candidate will build a program and organizational infrastructure to support both grass-roots and strategic, leadership-driven innovation within CHLA. Innovators will be supported at all stages of the innovation life cycle from ideation to prototyping to organizational diffusion and adoption.
The Chief Innovation Officer will be CHLA’s innovation evangelist, responsible for promoting a culture of innovation and championing innovation across the entire enterprise. The CInO will work closely and collaboratively with senior hospital administrative and clinical leadership to build and apply innovation tools and processes to solve problems and transform care delivery.
In addition to building new programs, the Chief Innovation Officer and the innovation program team will leverage and support existing innovation assets at CHLA to create a dynamic, robust innovation ecosystem. The Chief Innovation Officer will work in partnership with the Director of Technology Transfer who leads CHLA’s licensing and commercialization efforts. In addition, the Director of CHLA’s FDA-funded Consortium for Technology and Innovation in Pediatrics (CTIP) will be part of the Innovation Program team. CTIP was established with funding from the FDA to accelerate the development and commercialization of pediatric medical devices and software.
The CInO will hire and oversee Innovation Program staff and will liaise with both internal and external innovation stakeholders. The CInO will build bridges to both the local USC innovation community and the larger, national pediatric innovation community.
Under the leadership of the CInO, the cross-functional Innovation Program will drive practical and productive value for CHLA by supporting projects that lead to greater efficiency, enhanced experience, and better care for the children and families it serves, building CHLA’s reputation as a leader in pediatric innovation.
Position requires expertise in and understanding of innovation, innovation life cycle and innovation culture, with experience working in innovation programs in healthcare organizations, academic centers or incubators. In addition, position requires the strategic and tactical skills necessary to plan for, design or enhance hospital‑wide innovation programs and projects.
Candidate will have the ability to effectively manage the employees within assigned unit/department and to persuade and negotiate with peer level managers on issues and programs that impact assigned unit/department. Requires effectively dealing with conflicting views or issues and mediating fair and workable solutions.
Candidate will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to connect to both individuals and groups.
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or related field required. 6+ years’ experience in healthcare and/or innovation, including experience managing innovation in hospitals, academic settings, non-profits, or related businesses. 5 years managerial/supervisory experience.
